Re: Spain approves gay marriage bill
Sun, October 3, 2004 - 2:58 PMPP still has a majority but they said they would support it but we'll see the catholic church is really against it. They said the government was realeasing a virus and ruining the family. There are still quite a number of Franco supporters around as well.
Public opinion supports it! We'll see. I was at the celebration in Plaza de Chueca Friday night. It was great. There was a woman from the government there and she said there's still a fight left but this was the first step and things look good.
I'll try to keep people posted.

Re: Spain approves gay marriage bill
Sun, October 10, 2004 - 7:09 AMIt seems that the Supreme Court judges are getting involved in this now because they have a majority of conservatives in power. -

Re: Spain approves gay marriage bill
Sun, October 10, 2004 - 7:52 AM- which means it might be blocked there? And if so how is that possible? -

Re: Spain approves gay marriage bill
Sun, October 10, 2004 - 7:59 AMI'm only speculating on this but the conservatives who are in the Supreme Court are ultra-conservatives and appointed by Aznar and they may want to do something like the US Supreme Court did in the 2000 Presidential Elections... and try to block this law before it goes to the Parliament. -

Re: Spain approves gay marriage bill
Sun, October 10, 2004 - 8:23 AMOK we don't have a political supreme court here in Denmark and it can only judge laws already passed through parliament, but never before the laws have been passed - the motto here is 'nothing next to parliament, nothing above parliament' i.e. parliament decides everything and then (rarely) the supreme court can be asked to review the laws by citizens.
