SUMMARY: A Canadian television station is under investigation after
airing U.S. evangelist Jimmy Swaggart's remarks threatening to kill
gay people.
A Canadian television station is under investigation by the Canadian
Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission after airing
evangelist Jimmy Swaggart's remarks threatening to kill gay people.
During a televised sermon Swaggart said: "I'm trying to find the
correct name for it … this utter absolute, asinine, idiotic stupidity
of men marrying men. … I've never seen a man in my life I wanted to
marry. And I'm gonna be blunt and plain; if one ever looks at me like
that, I'm gonna kill him and tell God he died."
Swaggart added, "I'm not knocking the homosexuals. They need
salvation just like anyone else. I'm knocking the politicians."
The program aired in both Canada and the United States last week.
Omni 1, which aired the segment in Canada, refused to comment about
the incident, admitting only that it now faces a government
investigation.
On Monday, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (news - web sites)
(NGLTF) criticized the evangelist and some of his colleagues.
"The Task Force calls upon the leaders of [the] simulcast -- Dr.
James Dobson (Focus on the Family), Tony Perkins (Family Research
Council), Ted Haggard (National Association of Evangelicals), Richard
Land (Director of the Religious Liberties and Ethics Division of the
Southern Baptist Convention) -- to immediately denounce anti-gay
violence and specifically repudiate evangelist Jimmy Swaggart's
statement," the NGLTF said in a press release.
Swaggart's remarks also caught the attention of morons.org, a Web
site whose members poke fun at some news events. Kenster 999
wrote, "I love how he's going to 'tell God he died.' As if God
doesn't already know the truth, and is waiting to get his information
from Jimmy Swaggart. This really shows where Swaggart thinks he
stands in the rank of things."
Swaggart has had widely publicized opposite-sex marital problems. On
Feb. 21, 1988, he resigned his ministry after it was revealed he had
been consorting with a prostitute.
Jimmy...maybe I should pray for YOU!!!
